They may be among the smallest boats in the fleet, but the Sports Boats are making a big impression at The Yacht Sales Co. Sail Paradise 2026, with a new generation of young sailors taking on the Gold Coast alongside some significantly larger yachts.
Day Two put the spotlight on the emerging talent within the Sail Paradise fleet, with both Sports Boats featuring all-youth crews and more than 10 sailors under the age of 21 taking on skippering and crewing roles throughout the regatta.
The lightweight, high-performance Sports Boats have provided some spectacular moments across the weekend, using their speed and agility to race alongside and at times fly past some of the much larger yachts in the Sail Paradise fleet.
The Next Generation Takes to the Racecourse
For their young crews, Sail Paradise has provided an opportunity to step up into competitive yacht racing, take on greater responsibility onboard and share the racecourse with experienced sailors and established campaigns.
The youth presence extends beyond the Sports Boat division, with more than 10 sailors under 21 taking on roles throughout the wider fleet during Sail Paradise.
Their involvement is an encouraging sign for the future of the sport as young sailors continue to progress through the sailing pathway and gain experience aboard larger boats and in competitive yacht racing.
Day Two provided an impressive stage for them to do exactly that.
Racing Along the Gold Coast
A 10–15 knot breeze delivered another strong day of conditions as competitors raced along the Gold Coast coastline, with the course taking the fleet towards Burleigh and back towards Surfers Paradise.
The combination of fast Sports Boats, larger racing yachts and the Gold Coast skyline created a spectacular contrast on the water, showcasing the diversity of boats and sailors that make up the Sail Paradise fleet.
The 2026 Australian Yachting Championships also continued as part of the wider regatta, bringing some of Australia’s established racing campaigns onto the same waters as the young sailors beginning to make their mark.
Building the Future of Sailing
For Southport Yacht Club, continuing to create opportunities for young sailors to progress into this level of racing remains an important part of growing the sport.
With two all-youth Sports Boat crews and young sailors represented throughout the wider fleet, Sail Paradise 2026 has offered an exciting glimpse at the next generation coming through.
Racing continues tomorrow for the final day of The Yacht Sales Co. Sail Paradise 2026, bringing three days of competition along the Gold Coast coastline to a close.
For the young sailors who have spent the weekend racing alongside and flying past boats many times their size, the experience has shown that the future of Australian sailing is already out on the water.
